Moncton, July 8, 2025 – The Conseil économique du Nouveau-Brunswick (CÉNB) has released a new study conducted since February 2025 by economist Pierre-Marcel Desjardins, professor at the Université de Moncton and member of the CÉNB Board of Directors. The study examines the impact of the tariffs announced by the United States on New Brunswick’s economy.
In a context of growing trade uncertainty following the election of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency, this analysis seeks to better understand the effects of exports on employment—both by sector and by region. The study focuses exclusively on the export of goods, excluding services.
Using the most recent data available (from 2021), the study offers a clear picture of New Brunswick’s economic dependence on the U.S. market (92% of exports). It also provides an estimate of the number of jobs linked to these exports, with up to 21,700 potentially at risk if the tariffs are fully implemented starting July 9, 2025.
This publication is part of CÉNB’s ongoing efforts to equip policymakers and business communities with relevant data in order to better support the province’s economic development. The CÉNB has shared this study with the Hon. Luke Randall, Minister of SMEs and Economic Development, and Traci Simmons, CEO of Opportunities NB, to help businesses navigate this emerging challenge.
